This has followed the appointment made by Honorable President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi to the new members of the Commission responsible for managing electoral affairs in Zanzibar.
The election commission is composed of seven members, five men including the Chairperson Judge, George Joseph Kazi and two women, representing 28.6 percent of women and 71.4 percent of men.
TAMWA- ZNZ would like to express its best wishes to women members privileged to hold this prestigious position thus kindly requesting them to uphold interests and welfare of women in the elections, including setting up systems to report any possible abuse or any form of Violence of Women in Politics (VAWP), the safety of women in the elections and to oppose the war on issues of corruption and misuse of funds in the election.
TAMWA-ZNZ also recognizes the progress of the Commission to have two women as compared to previous years having one woman or no and congratulates the President of Zanzibar Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi for these efforts.
Therefore, it is very important for the appointing authorities to ensure that they appoint women and men on a 50/50 basis in order to achieve gender equality and strategically increase girls morale & trust that they have equal chance to hold leadership posts and also to go along with the country’s population where according to the 2022 census, women are more than 50 percent.
Similarly, TAMWA-ZNZ would like to remind that Zanzibar, being a part of Tanzania, has ratified many regional and international agreements to realize gender parity in decision-making bodies.
Likewise, resolution 1325 of the United Nations Security Council issued on October 31, 2000 states. “Increasing the participation of women in decision-making levels promotes the country’s democracy, economy, peace, and stability in the long term”.
The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) of 1979 in article 7 insists on having equal rights between women and men in elections and the entire process of voting and being elected to hold positions.
